🛒 Ingredients

  • Pre-cooked white corn flour 70 g · 250 kcal
  • Water 100 g · 0 kcal
  • Cooked black beans 100 g · 130 kcal
  • White fresh cheese, shredded 50 g · 150 kcal

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the pre-cooked white corn flour with water and about 1/2 teaspoon of salt; knead until a smooth, moist, and pliable dough forms that doesn't stick to your hands.
  2. Divide the dough into equal portions and form them into thick, round patties about 1-inch thick; these are your arepas.
  3. Heat a griddle or heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat; cook the arepas for 7-8 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through, optionally finishing in the oven for a few minutes if they are very thick.
  4. While the arepas are cooking, warm the black beans and shred the white fresh cheese.
  5. Once cooked, carefully cut each arepa horizontally to create a pocket, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  6. Fill the warm arepa generously with the cooked black beans and then top with the shredded white cheese.
