👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Rinse the green gram (moong dal) thoroughly under running water, then soak it in fresh water for 30 minutes. Drain the soaked dal and set aside.
  2. In a pressure cooker or a heavy-bottomed pot, combine the drained dal with 200ml of water and a pinch of turmeric powder. Cook until the dal is soft and mushy, about 10-15 minutes in a pressure cooker or 20-30 minutes in a pot.
  3. Meanwhile, heat vegetable oil in a separate pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent. Then add minced ginger, garlic, and chopped green chili, cooking until fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Stir in chopped tomatoes, coriander powder, and the remaining turmeric powder. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the oil separates from the masala, indicating it's well cooked.
  6. Pour the cooked dal into the masala mixture. Add salt to taste and additional water to reach your desired consistency, then bring the curry to a gentle simmer.
  7. Add garam masala and fresh chopped cilantro. Stir well and let it simmer for another 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld beautifully.
  8. Serve the Green Gram Curry hot, typically accompanied by steamed rice, roti, or naan.
