- Gruyère or Emmentaler cheese, grated 100 g · 390 kcal
- Medium onion, sliced 150 g · 60 kcal
- Unsalted butter 25 g · 179 kcal
👨🍳 Instructions
- Combine flour, egg, water, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a large bowl to form a thick, sticky dough for the spätzle; mix vigorously with a wooden spoon until smooth and bubbly.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Using a spätzle maker, press or scrape the dough into the boiling water.
- Cook the spätzle for 2-3 minutes until they float to the surface; remove with a slotted spoon and rinse briefly with cold water to prevent sticking.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat, then add the sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until they are deeply caramelized and tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). In an oven-safe dish, layer half of the cooked spätzle, sprinkle with half of the grated cheese, then add half of the caramelized onions.
- Repeat the layering with the remaining spätzle, cheese, and onions. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the dish is heated through.
