  • Onion 50 g · 20 kcal
  • Garlic 8 g · 12 kcal
  • Fresh ginger 5 g · 4 kcal
  • Turmeric powder 1 g · 4 kcal

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Rinse yellow split peas thoroughly under cold water; soak them for at least 30 minutes, then drain.
  2. In a pot, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and turmeric powder to the pot. Sauté for another minute until fragrant, stirring constantly.
  4. Stir in the drained yellow split peas and enough water to cover them by about an inch. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
  5. Cover and simmer for 45-60 minutes, or until peas are very tender and the stew has thickened, stirring occasionally. Add salt and the green chili (if using) towards the end of cooking.
  6. Serve Kik Alicha hot, traditionally with injera bread, or with rice or other flatbreads.
