🛒 Ingredients

  • Masa Harina 60 g · 210 kcal
  • Refried Beans (cooked and mashed) 60 g · 80 kcal
  • Vegetable oil 5 g · 45 kcal

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the Masa Harina with approximately 1/2 cup (120ml) of warm water and a pinch of salt; mix well until a soft, pliable dough forms. Knead for 2-3 minutes until smooth, adding more water if needed to reach a play-dough consistency.
  2. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Lightly grease your hands with vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
  3. Press each ball of dough into a thick disc using your palms. Create a small well in the center of each disc.
  4. Fill each well with about 1.5 tablespoons of refried beans. Carefully fold the edges of the dough over the filling to enclose it completely, then gently flatten and reshape into a disc, about 1/2 inch thick.
  5. Heat a comal or non-stick griddle over medium heat. Lightly brush the griddle with vegetable oil.
  6. Place the pupusas on the hot griddle and cook for 5-7 minutes per side, or until golden brown and slightly puffed. Serve hot with Curtido (pickled cabbage slaw) and salsa.
