👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Rinse the red lentils thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear; drain well and set aside. Finely chop the onion, mince the garlic, and grate the ginger.
  2. In a pot, combine the rinsed lentils, chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and 300ml of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until lentils are tender.
  3. While the lentils cook, prepare the tempering (tadka). Heat vegetable oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  4. Add the chopped onion to the pan and sauté until golden brown and softened, about 5-7 minutes. Then, add the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the coriander powder, red chili powder, and garam masala into the tadka, cooking for 30 seconds to release their aromas. Be careful not to burn the spices.
  6. Pour the prepared tadka into the cooked lentil dal, stir well, and season with salt to taste. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving hot with rice or naan.
