🛒 Ingredients

  • Desalted salt cod 100 g · 100 kcal
  • Ripe tomatoes 100 g · 18 kcal
  • Red onion 40 g · 16 kcal
  • Bell pepper (any color) 50 g · 13 kcal
  • Avocado 50 g · 80 kcal
  • Olive oil 10 g · 80 kcal
  • Fresh lime juice 15 g · 4 kcal
  • Scotch Bonnet pepper (or other hot pepper) 5 g · 2 kcal

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Soak the salt cod in a bowl of cold water, changing the water frequently for at least 8-24 hours to properly desalt it. Once desalted, drain the cod, pat it dry, and flake it into small pieces, carefully removing any bones or skin.
  2. Finely chop the tomatoes, red onion, bell pepper, and Scotch Bonnet pepper; remove seeds from the hot pepper for less heat if desired. Dice the avocado into small cubes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flaked cod, chopped tomatoes, red onion, bell pepper, and diced avocado. Add the olive oil and fresh lime juice.
  4. Gently toss all ingredients together until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning with a pinch of black pepper if desired. No additional salt should be needed due to the residual salt in the cod.
  5. Serve Buljol immediately as a side dish, with crackers, or as part of a larger breakfast spread. It can also be chilled for a short time before serving.
