  1. Soak the stale white bread in milk for 5-10 minutes, then squeeze out any excess liquid thoroughly.
  2. Roughly chop the pickled herring fillets, apple, onion, and hard-boiled eggs.
  3. Pass all chopped ingredients, along with the squeezed bread, through a meat grinder twice or process in a food processor until very finely minced.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a bowl, add the softened unsalted butter, and mix thoroughly until well combined and smooth.
  5. Cover and chill Forshmak in the refrigerator for at least 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to meld. Serve cold as an appetizer, typically spread on rye bread or crackers.
